Red Deer Lake Hike (Aug '13)
My friend and I got up bright and early this morning with the plan to hike the Buchanan Pass Trail up to Red Deer Lake. We got there eventually... after quite an adventure with some off-roading! To get to the trailhead, my friend's Jeep Wrangler had to climb and drop off rocks of all sizes and ford through ponds and "puddles". The hike itself was fairly uneventful, with it around 7 miles round trip and just over 1k in elevation gain. Red Deer Lake sits underneath a couple of glaciers in the Indian Peaks Wilderness, which keeps it pretty full and healthy all year long. I was glad to finally get up to this area since I've been talking about it for a couple years- but based on the roads in and out I doubt I'll be coming back any time soon!
